Cabin Fever 2025 r/c Model Submarine Action
Jake, Ken, and I attended this year's Cabin Fever Expo event held in Lebanon, PA. A most enjoyable two days of running our subs in the indoor pool provided -- emphasis this year was on the display and operation of model ships, boats, and submarines. A very, very well organized and administered event. You can bet that from now on in I will be a regular at this annual event. Great time was had by all.

My partner in crime, Jake, showing off the little 1/96 Type-21 r/c submarine we're taking to the upcoming Cabin Feaver Expo event. Cabin Fever is a two day event that features an 'indoor' pool where we'll be operating this and other r/c submarine models. The event will be the perfect opportunity to beak in the models new owner, Joe Hoffman (an excellent model builder in his own right) on how to...

This was the first open water run of this new r/c submarine. Completed (functionally, anyway) only one day before this run. Not bad, but trimming is not rock solid yet. Soon.
Jake and me testing his Ray Mason Disney NAUTILUS model at Diamond Lake

This model submarine operated near flawlessly at last year's SubFest, an annual, all r/c submarine model regatta sponsored by the NautilusDrydocks, held at the Red Clay Resort in Georga. Jake and I took the model to the lake this morning to verify the boat ready for this year's SubFest. Total cluster-fuck; it seems the God's of Chaos visited us with a vengeance: at least five major flaws were i...
Initial test run of camera barge -- very noisy
Переглядів 965 місяців тому
The camera barge is a mobile platform upon which will be placed an array of above and below surface video cameras. Seen atop the barge for this first test run is a two-axis remote controlled gimbal. Excess noise produced by the dog-bone type motor-shaft couplers was encountered. I'm working tonight to replace those with flexible hose couplers to reduce vehicle self-noise. Got to get this beast ...

Initial test of NAUTILUS propeller pitching mechanism
David and Jake are hands down my two favorite Torpedomen… but let’s be real, that’s like saying Gonorrhea is my favorite STD.
OTFFLMAO!!!... You SOB, you. We weapons Goons have to stick together.
Do you unravel your antenna it leave it bundeled up?
Good catch, sir. Yes. The antenna is stretched out and secured under the SubDriver cylinder.
Good video Dave
Yeah, "cabin fever" is a thing guys and can be horribly dangerous to one's sanity and savings account.
Is this before or after the battery mishap Dave? Hopefully no problem getting table at Cabin Fever. ----- Ken
Yeah. This footage was shot a day or two before the fire. The fire was confined to the area camera-side of the Taig lathe you see at the beginning of this video. The lathe motor and bed were slicked -- new machine on order -- some of the adjacent wooden shelves are a bit singed, but other than that material loss was minimal. No smoke damage to speak of. Clean-up took the better part of a day. Back to normal. Jake and I will arrive at the loading dock hours before they open the facility for set-up, so we hope to secure some prime real-estate pool-side Thursday afternoon. If you're not there yet well work to grab you a table as well.
Lovely home and wonderful workshop. Lots of eye candies😍😍😍
Such a nice water line! Small subs struggle with that, could we peak inside?
try this on for size: ua-cam.com/video/UFQWiX8UkoI/v-deo.html
Nice!
Has anyone done the Penguin's Pre-Atomic sub? I've seen pics of the original model online; it is in need of restoration.
What the fuck does that have to do with this?
@@montigobear Model submarines.
LOL!
How well does this model of Seaview handle and how good is the video you capture? Regards to you and Ellie.
Model performs surprisingly well on surface and submerged, but the internal video is... meh! Cancer got Ellie almost four years ago.
@@montigobear I didn't know that, normally I hear about these things almost as soon as they happen. My deepest condolences to Dave and the rest of the family. I know she is badly missed.
@@robertf3479 No problem, Robert. Time marches on.
Beautiful 👍🏻
These two old TMs crack me up!
Did you recover boat after first open water trial? That's a Happy Thanksgiving!
Not sure what's harder to listen to the wind or David's voice and those legs geez
Smarty-pants!
1982?!? Wow
Yeah, while the rest of us were whacking off to Hustler magazine, this guy was doing the heavy lifting of snapping screen shots off the television screen, researching, pattern making, tool making, and the production of the Disney, fucking, NAUTILUS. Ray's the MAN!
I am surprised you can stay connect whilst underwater,
Not too deep though and you are ok.
in fresh water the lower frequencies, 900, 75, 72, and 27mHz punch through just fine.
This video is a big waste of time. You blabbing holding a remote to something people cant see 😂😂😂 yall skip over half if you wanna see the point 😂😂😂
"You have a habit of chasing your tail in detail" Lol😂😂😂
Listen to "true love" by pink
I know this make would be a task but I would love to see someone make a model version of the movie Aliens Drop Ship. That would be awesome. I've seen someone make a Hunter Killer Ship from the movie Terminator. That thing was sweet this was about 20 years ago but yeah that would be awesome
Haha, i too just rebuilt an old hull with a gopro on a pan servo . I want to parallel the subs when running. Maybe i will post a video after the West Coast Golden Gate sub run.
At the 8:32 mark, it was nearly a dead ringer for the end scene of the movie when Nautilus was getting washed over just before she went down. Good stuff, guys. I have no doubt you'll have her dialed in and ready to go
Fpv setup or just recording? So cool.
Just recorded. My 1/35 Type-23 has a FPV set-up.
Fun! I was called crazy, daredevil, and other names not to be typed if I tested a sub’s first dive going away from shore. I have learned and make it a practice to test near shore. However, I also remember my first run jitters too. Where you are trying to have a calm composure when your insides are screaming. A few more adjustments and this will be dialed in!
Infeed, Tom. At the end of this Jake and I compiled a list of five items that needed fixing/adjustment. Almost there!
Whenever I see two TMs interacting together, it always reminds me of the opening scene from 2001 A Space Odyssey.
@@stevemayou1029 Next photo opportunity will be Jake and me on our haunches, one of us tossing a bone into the air.
Where is your camera barge. It would have been a good test for you too.
David, can you get a polarize filter for that camera? It might help with sun reflecting off the water. A hood over the lens could help too. Otherwise outstanding platform. Love the low perspective.
Sure can, Tom. Good tip. Keep fighting the good fight on Facebook, pal.
Dave is this a filming platform for the subs. Dan
Yup. I'll also use it to video surface fleet maneuvers at the upcoming 'fleet-run' at Rocky mount later this month.
Lots to be added to this very versatile camera platform this winter.
Nice camera placement. Can't see the checkered deck.
If I take care not to depress the gimbal platform too much in the 'tilt down' position.
@@montigobear will there be additional mounts like water line, semi submerged or underwater?
@@coast219 Yup
Any new builds David?
Storm Shadows launched.
Wish we were closer enjoy your day

Saw a ASW ornithopter buzzing the sub.
Careful. Don't fall in.
LOL. I will
I love Dave Merriman.
Ahoy DDMIII ! So Great to see your highness on FB!
that runs great!
Great vid
Active bow planes?
With few exceptions all my boats have practical bow planes or sail planes. We gotta get you guys back to Groton -- miss you creatures from the Great North.
@montigobear Likewise you stubborn set in your ways curmudgeon!
😍 Beautiful
How long ago was this dave?
Whats up with the periscope antenna? Your radio appears to be 75mhz. Is the antenna a camera feed?
No down-link from the boat. The camera footage is saved to an on-board SD card. The periscope is there only for 'looks'.
Hello David! I’m glad to see your great work. Lin
David nice to see your 1/96 Seawolf in action. Dan
Yeah. Had a bad history with it. Eventually came down to a bad receiver. Once swapped out it runs great now. My favorite camera mule.
Who had the right of way?
In almost all cases, a submerged vessel yields the right of way. The one exception is when they are piloted by the Godfather of RC Submarines...
@@stevemayou1029 Damned straight!
